Sid’s heart was still pounding, and blood was still pouring from his multiple wounds when he and Orman made their getaway. He tore strips of cloth off his half-cape and tied them tight around his left arm to stop the bleeding. Orman tossed a cloak over Sid’s shoulders, and told him to stay huddled within it until they were beyond the city walls.

Their escape hadn’t been an easy one. Sid and Orman had only just gotten the body into the wagon when a pair of crushers arrived on foot. They heard the shouts, people hollering about what they’d seen. Hopping into the seat and taking the reins, Orman had said, “Fear not. If they ask me later, I’ll say I took the man somewhere to try and save him. I’ve got a good relationship with the local constabulary.”

“Then why even make our escape?” Sid had asked.

“Because, they’ll confiscate the body. And for my purposes, I need to be alone with it awhile.”

“What exactly are you intending to do?”

“You work with the dead one way, I work with them another.”

Their journey away from the Avenue of Song was the tense. Bells were ringing all around. A search was on. They passed four guardsmen on horseback, charging directly towards them. Sid swallowed, worried that they would take a peek inside the wagon canopy, and thanked whatever gods that they had not.

Away from the Avenue of Song, down the Street of Bones, then up the Avenue of Silk. They passed a couple of constables on their way, blowing whistles. The whole way, all he kept thinking was, Gods, we came to this city to lay low for a bit, now our likenesses are likely to be on wanted posters tomorrow. Part of Sid wanted to laugh, the other part wanted to strangle his partner.

They made it to the city’s gates, and had a short chat with the guardsmen there, with whom it seemed Orman also had a working relationship. They all knew him as the apothecary to the thane himself, and all it took was a toll paid at a discount to leave Bedlam, not even an inspection of his wagon.

They crossed the short bridge, which traversed a small creek and, at the other side, split into three hardpan roads. Orman took the one on the left, and rode it for half an hour before he pulled his wagon to the side of the road. He jumped down, spry as a young pup, and removed the wagon harness from one horse before handing it over to Sid. “Go and fetch your Enchanter.”

“Why? What are you going to do?”

“Prepare the body. What else?”

“For what?”

The apothecary winked and touched his nose. “You’ll see later if you return with your friend. Now, off with you.”

Sid sighed, and did as he was told. He mounted the horse and turned it back towards the city. Then, he looked back at the apothecary. “Orman? I’m not going to regret this, am I?”

“A better question is, will I?”
